Mary Byrne Gavin was born at Monroe, Wisconsin, on May 5, 1861, to Thomas and Catherine Byrne, and passed out of this world at the age of 72 years. She grew to womanhood at Monroe and at the age of 21 was united in marriage to George Gavin. He took his bride to Iowa and lived there two years, coming to South Dakota in 1885. They homesteaded on land two miles south of Willow Lake. They lived on that farm until 1901 when they moved to Willow Lake.
Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gavin, one son dying at the age of two years and two daughters and one son survived. They are Mrs. Katie Bergstreser of Willow Lake, Mrs. Wendell (Rose) Erbes of Rochester Minnesota, and James Gavin of Vienna, SD. Mrs. Gavin leaves one brother, John Byrne of Sioux City, Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. James Kinsalla of Denton, Montana and Mrs. Ella Murphy of Janesville, Wisconsin.
