In March of 1846, John and Julia Ary loaded their personal effects, livestock and farm machinery into a chartered railroad car and set out for their new home in Edwards County. They settled on a quarter of land near Fellsburg, Kansas. There were ten children in their family: Minnie, George, Lilla, Charlie, Cora, Ella, Myrtle, Belle, June, Emma, and Nattie. They settled on an eighty acre farm south of Lewis, Kansas, later moving to a homestead seven miles southeast of Lewis.
Charles A. Ary met and married Theresa Alice Bowman on September 3, 1903. Following the death of her father, Theresa, her mother and her younger brothers came to Edwards County from Marcos, Colorado. She attended school at Kinsley.
As a bride, she and her husband moved to a farm in the Lewis community where they raised a family of nine children, six girls and three boys: Doris Cramer, Gladys Strate, Bertha Guthrie, Mable Laswell, Esther Bell, Pauline Brill, John Ary, LeRoy Ary (deceased) and Paul Ary.
Charles and Alice remained on the farm until August 1946, when they moved to their home in Lewis. On September 3, 1953, they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Mrs. Ary passed away February 10, 1954 and Mr. Ary on August 3, 1963.
