Ira Ainsworth was born in the State of Vermont in 1814. Ainsworth became Colonel in the 10th NYS Militia unit, and when the unit was mustered into volunteer service as the 177th NY Infantry Regiment in November 1862, Ainsworth was appointed Colonel. The regiment left NY State on December 16, 1862 and served in the 3d Brigade, Sherman's Division, Department of the Gulf, from January, 1863. Under Colonel Ainsworth, it was honorably discharged and mustered out September 24, to date September 10, 1863, at Albany, N. Y.
During its service the regiment lost 1 officer and 3 enlisted men Killed in Action; 1 officer and 3 enlisted men of battle wounds; and 3 officers and 149 enlisted men to disease. The majority of these men contracted Typhoid Fever and died in a military hospital at Bonnet Carre, Louisiana. Many were brought back to Albany and are buried in Albany Rural. Ira Ainsworth died of Dropsy (Edema, or swelling of any organ) in Albany in 1876. He was just 62 years old.
