Adonirom Judson "Jud" Russell, a lawyer, was employed in various capacities by the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, of which his brother Edward Lafayette Russell was president. Jud moved from Mobile, Alabama to Meridian in 1889 to become Attorney for the railroad. In 1895 he was elected without opposition to the Mississippi House of Representatives, and he soon assumed the position of Speaker of the House from 1900-1902. At the time of his death, he had come to Oxford to deliver the Commencement address at the University, and died the next morning (June 4, 1902) of a heart attack. His funeral in Meridian was attended by the Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General and many other Mississippi officials. (Source: Southern Kith and Kin, Vol. 4, c 1958.)
