St. Jacob--Mrs. Walburga Spohn, nee Berkley, aged 70 years 4 months and 5 days, died, Thursday evening after a lingering illness, of dropsy. Deceased was born Oct. 18, 1822, in Langhurst, Grosherzogthum, Baden, and came to America with her father, Michael Berkley in 1828, making Cincinnati their home. They moved to St. Louis in 1843, where she was married to Jacob Schroth on February 22nd, the same year. They lived at St. Louis until 1849 when they came to St. Jacob and engaged for many years in the mercantile business. Her husband died April 7th, 1860. They had 8 children, of whom Jacob Schroth and Mrs. Elizabeth Schulte are the only survivors. She was married to Jacob Spohn August 22nd, 1861, by which marriage she had one child, Maggie, now Mrs. Daniel Liebler. Mr. Spohn died January 7th, 1871. There are 13 grand-children and 1 great-grand-child living. Her first husband, Jacob Schroth, was among the first who laid out and kept up the old cemetery, while he and his wife were among the first members of the Evangeline Protestant church which has grown to a large and strong congregation. She was an active member of the Frauenverein, under the auspices of which she was buried Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The remains were taken to the Evangeline Protestant church where services were held, thence to the cemetery. Rev. John Bruce officiated.
