VIRGINIA BEACH - John Otis Dabney, M.D., slipped away to be with God Saturday, July 2, 2005, in Norfolk, Va. He was a native of Hampton, Va., born to the late Mary R. and Otis Dabney. He was preceded in death by a sister, Constance Beatrice Dabney. He was a graduate with high honors of George P. Phenix High School in 1950. He also received degrees from Morehouse University, Atlanta University, North Carolina Medical School and Howard University with high honors and with distinction. Dr. Dabney served as a teacher and mentor to many aspiring doctors. These monumental encounters at Meharry Medical College and Eastern Virginia Medical School brought forth many outstanding doctors prepared to serve their communities. John's missionary zeal to serve his fellow man was evident daily through his dedication to the profession, nurturing personality and desire to have a positive impact on the lives of everyone he met. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Cooke Dabney; his daughters, Belinda Matingou (Christian) of Austin, Texas, and Teresa Mikofsky (Daniel) of Buffalo, N.Y.; his two sons, William Jenkins of New Jersey and Forrest Cooke of Virginia Beach; his five sisters, Eleanor D. Johnson, Delores D. Hunt, Mildred D. Manning, Deanna D. Hill, all of Hampton, and Inez D. Maven (Abraham) of Petersburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Wesley, Cyrena, Troy, Seychelle, Miles and Croix; one aunt, Pearl Youell, and one uncle, Stanley Redcross (Vashtie) of Hampton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A viewing will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, 251 W. Queen St., Hampton. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Friday, July 8, at First Baptist Church Lincoln Park, 1100 W. Queen St., Hampton, with Bishop Samuel Cutler officiating. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will assemble by 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Dr. Dabney will be placed in the church by 10 a.m. Friday and viewed until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dr. John Otis Dabney Scholarship Fund, First Baptist Church Lincoln Park. Arrangements by Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, Ronald C.
