Daughter of Stephen Swain and his first wife, Elizabeth White.

Wife of Samuel Smithwick.

*******
Mary Swain was the eldest child of Stephen Swain and his first wife Elizabeth White Swain. She was born about 1693/4, or perhaps earlier [her parents were married by 1691], probably in Currituck County, North Carolina, where her parents had met and married. She married Samuel Smithwick, about 1713, in Chowan County. She and Samuel had known children Sarah, Elizabeth, and John, all born between about 1713 to 1720. There may have been more children, but none others are known.

Mary and Samuel's daughter Elizabeth (named after Mary's mother) was married, to William Ross, by 1730; Elizabeth and John's first son, Captain William Ross Jr., was born in 1731. Daughter Sarah married Luke Mizell about 1740. Sarah and Luke's daughter Sarah Mizell married Benjamin Richardson c 1767. Not much is known about son John.

Some trees show Mary's husband as John Smithwick, but the will of John, 18 June 1764 in Bertie County, names children William, Luke, Joel, Sarah, Mary, and Cloanah, who of course do not match the names of the Smithwick grandchildren in the will of Patience, Mary's mother.

From "The Kenan family and some allied families," compiled by Alvaretta Kenan Register:

""RICHARDSON
Many of the early settlers of Effingham, Screven, and Bulloch Counties in Georgia, were of North Carolina stock. This was the case of the Richardson family.
1. Benjamin Richardson, b. ca 1740; m. 1767, Sarah Mizell, dau. of Luke Mizell IV and his wife Sarah Smithwick, dau. of Samuel Smithwick and Mary Swaine. Benjamin and wife Sarah, with Sarah's widowed mother Mrs. Sarah Mizell, migrated to the area that is now Bulloch County, in 1770. Benjamin took up land on Scull's Creek near the Ogeechee River. He was tax collector in the three year period before Screven Co. was cutoff into Bulloch Co. Benjamin Richardson died in Bulloch Co. in 17991. Issue: [Deed Book A, pg. 59].""
