Bryan Guinness was a handsome, rich, bright son of Evelyn and Walter Guinness. The heir of the Guinness brewery fortune, founded in Dublin in 1759, he was sentimental and sensitive and so shy that making a public speech would reduce him to nausea. What most of his friends would regard as his most endearing quality was his overall sweet nature to those he loved and cared for, sometimes to a fault. His education at Eton was cut short by a bout with polio. Because of his loss of muscle tone and weakness, he began to write. His poetry was the major point of his focus. He met the classically beautiful Honourable Diana Mitford one night at a dinner party given by Lady Violet Astor, in which they were seated next to one another. He was twenty two, Diana was 18. During his courtship he fell even more in love with Diana soon asking for her hand in marriage. As her parents felt at 18 she was far too young, they suggested that she wait a year. During the summer, speant with her younger sisters Diana sulked around the house "looking pale and interesting" as sister Jessica recalled. Bryan and Diana soon married and began a family with Jonathan and Desmond. The were the toast of London giving fabulous parties with the likes of Winston Churchill, Bryan Howard and Lytton Strachey. It was at their shared estate in Biddesden in which their close friend, Dora Carrington, who was lost after the passing of Stratchey, borrowed a gun from Bryan and Diana and committed suicide. The union of Diana and Bryan soon came to an end when at a party Diana was seated next to a young Oswald Mosely to "see what kind of effect they'd have on one another." Diana soon began an affair and then divorced Bryan.Bryan, still in love with Diana, took the blame saying it was he, not Diana that had an affair. He later was married to another country girl Elizabeth Nelson, but always was generous and thought fondly of his beloved Diana. He later begame Baron Moyne after the passing of his father Walter.
