Born August 21, 1931, in Barton, MD, Mrs. Swaim was the daughter of the late Clarence Cecil "Ted" Russell and Clemma Christina (Dye) Russell. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Lynn Russell. Jean graduated from Barton High School, Catherman's Business School and Potomac State College.
She worked in the administrative and secretarial fields in Florida, Alabama, Baltimore, Hagerstown, and Cumberland. She retired July 1, 2002, as an administrative associate of Public Works for the City of Cumberland with 22 years of service.
She was a staunch Republican who kept abreast of all the political news and loved to discuss politics with everyone. Jean was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Cumberland, and the Order of the Daughters of the King. Jean is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Norton and her husband, Michael, Flintstone, MD; her grandchildren, Matthew Bernard and his fiance, Mary Van Meter, Cresaptown, MD; Mitchell Bernard and his fiance, Britany Grabenstein, Rockville, MD; and Kayla Norton, Flintstone, MD; her great grandson, Ryder Bernard, Cresaptown, MD; her sister, Nellie Russell Tighe and her husband, Ray; her nephew, Ray Tighe, Jr., and his wife, Kristy, all of Midland, MD: her aunt, Elaine Bosley, Lonaconing, MD; a special cousin, Cheryl Dorsey, who was her care giver for many years and was a true friend to the end; as well as many cousins and close friends.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Saturday, August 29, 2009, from 6:00 P.M., to 8:00 P.M. A funeral service will be conducted at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Sunday, August 30, 2009, at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Edward Chapman officiating.
Pallbearers will be Michael Norton, Matthew Bernard, Mitchell Bernard, Ray Tighe, Jr., and Joe Dorsey.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Barton, MD.
The family requests that memorials be made to the WMHS-Home Hospice Care, c/o: Linda Green, 900 Seton Drive, Cumberland, MD 21502. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the hospice nurses and aids for their dedicated and compassionate care of Miss Jean as well as all her wonderful and loving sitters.
