Margaret Lauinger Smestad, 85, died May 17, 1998, in a Sarasota, Fla. hospital. A celebration of life of Margaret Lauinger Smestad, formerly of Selfridge, will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Friday, at St. Philomena Catholic Church, Selfridge, with the Rev. Casimir Paluck officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Thursday, at Perry Funeral Home.

Margaret was born on Oct. 12, 1912, at Strasburg to Quenton and Philomenia (Glass) Wingerter. When she was seven years old, the family moved to Selfridge where she attended Golden Wealth Rural School. She studied music in Fort Yates.

She married Damian J. "Tom" Lauinger on May 29, 1932 at Fort Yates. They lived in Alameda, Calif., from 1940-1947, where he did construction work for the U.S. Navy. After World War II, they returned to Selfridge and purchased the Palace Motel and Restaurant which she operated for 22 years. Tom died in 1965. She married Lloyd Smestad on Aug. 28, 1969 at Selfridge. They operated Smestad's Super Value grocery store there. They enjoyed spending winters in Arizona. Lloyd died in 1984. Margaret lived in Sarasota, Fla. the past seven years at the Village Retirement Home and the home of her daughter, Sharon and Michael Holsinger.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Dee Lauinger, Dick and Gloria Lauinger, all of Aberdeen, S.D., and Tom and Judy Lauinger, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Michael Holsinger, and Judy and Roy Winkelmann, all of Sarasota; two sisters, Ann Coyle, Breien, and Francis Barrett, Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Joseph Wingerter, Mandan; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
