Mr. Hjelmstad was born June 10, 1911, in Reynolds, where he grew up and attended school. He married Adeline Hove Feb. 17, 1935, in Finley, N.D. He worked for Thompson Lumber Co. in both Larimore, N.D., and Hatton, N.D., the Salzer Lumber Co., Hankinson, N.D., Riedesel Lumber, Fargo, and then for Great Plains Supply in Cando, N.D., until he retired in 1976. He and his wife then returned to the Reynolds-Hatton area. She died in 1994.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary (Ardell) Landa, Reynolds; a brother, Edgar (Adeline), Fargo; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Sunday from 5-8, with a prayer service at 7, in Bilden Funeral Home, Hatton.
Funeral: Monday at 10:30 in St. John Lutheran Church, Hatton.
Burial: St. John Cemetery, Hatton.
