John Parr, Sr., son of William Parr, was born 1725-1730 and married Miriam (__?__) about 1749. She survived him and died after 1808.

John Parr is first found in Halifax Co., VA in the year 1748, where he owned 400 acres of land on the South Fork of the Mayo River in the extreme southeastern part. His landholdings were near the Virginia-North Carolina border across from Surry County, NC. (Old Survey Book I (1746-1782), Pittsylvania County, Virginia by Marian Dodson Chiarito, 1988, p90)

There are many extant court records and land transactions involving John Parr, Sr. in Virginia including the following.

In 1754 John Parr, Sr. added 200 acres on the Little Fork of the Spoon River. His son, John Parr, Jr., later acquired 400 acres of land on Brushy Fork of Russell Creek near his father's land. Both of these creeks empty into the South Mayo River. (Entry Record Book (1737-1770), Clerk's Office at the Pittsylvania County Courthouse, Chatham, Virginia, p215)

John Parr, Sr.'s son, Arthur Parr, is credited with 400 acres on the North Fork Russell's Creek in 1755. (Land Entries in the Present Virginia Counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin & Patrick by Marian Dodson Chiarito, 1984, p181).

The Halifax County, Virginia, Court Orders 1758-1759, Plea Book 2, Part 2, p. 119 reads: "August Court 1759, John Parr (Sr.), assignee of Robert Crump (II), assignee of Mathew Read who was assignee of Robert Read, Plt, vs. Adam Loving, Deft., In Debt. For reasons appearing, suit dismissed." (NOTE: John Parr, Sr. was the father of Mary Parr whom Robert Crump III would marry in 1770.)

In 1766, John Parr, Sr. records 400 acres of land on the South Branch of the South Mayo River ((Land Entries in the Present Virginia Counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin & Patrick by Marian Dodson Chiarito, 1984, p291).

On 15 August 1778 John Parr (Sr.) of the county of Henry to John Fletcher of same county for the sum of seventy five pounds conveys 198 acres on White Heads Creek. Signed: John Parr. Miriam Parr, wife of John Parr (Sr.), relinquishes her right of dower to the above (Abstracts of Deed Books I & II, Henry County, Virginia (17 Feb 1776 to 22 Jul 1784), p. 175,176). This land transaction by John Parr, Sr. was to his son-in-law, John Fletcher, who married his daughter, Miriam.

On 11 Feb. 1788 John Parr, Sr. of Henry County gifts to John Peter Corns of the same for the love and affection he bears toward his son-in-law......gives land on the east side of the Mayo River, being 70 and 3/4 acres. Signed: John Parr, Sr. Proved 11 Feb. 1788 (Abstracts of Deed Books III & IV, Henry County, Virginia: Deed Book III (Aug. 3, 1784 - Sept. 1788), pp377,378).

On 06 Oct 1789 John Parr Sr. of Henry County gifts to Arthur Parr of the same, for love and affection he bears his son, grants him two parcels of land on the Mayo River....on the south side 212 acres and the other tract 148 acres. Signed: John Parr. Witness: None. Proved 30 Nov. 1789 (Abstracts of Deed Books III & IV, Henry County, Virginia: Deed Book IV (Sept. 1788 - June 1792), pp53,54).

John Parr, Sr.'s land was only a few miles from the land patented in 30 May 1767 by Robert Crump III who would later become his son-in-law by marrying his daughter, Mary. Robert Crump III's land consisted of 400 acres located on Green Creek which also flows into the South Mayo River.

John Parr, Sr. was sworn in as Constable in Halifax Co, VA in May 1762 (Virginia, Court Orders 1759-1762, Plea Book 3, p203, May Court 1762). He was a Captain in the Pittsylvania Co., VA Committee of Safety (Militia) in Sept. 1775 which was controlled by the British military. His daughter, Mary Parr, was recorded as marrying Robert Crump III in 1770 at Pittsylvania Co., VA. (Pittsylvania County was formed from part of Halifax County in 1767.)

John Parr renounced his allegiance to Great Britain and swore allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1777 at Henry Co., VA. (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography Vol. IX, July 1901, No. I, p16) Geographically, Henry Co., VA, Patrick Co., VA and Pittsylvania Co., VA are in juxtaposition to each other.

In a Patrick Co., VA court record of Thursday, 26 Feb 1795 is a reference to a deed transaction of John Parr, Sr. to Robert Crump III, his son-in-law, of Stokes County, North Carolina [Ref: Abstracts of Order Book "O", Patrick County, Virginia (June 1791-August 1800), p88]. NOTE: Patrick Co., VA borders Stokes Co., N.C on the north and Robert Crump III was the husband of Mary (Parr) Crump, daughter of John Parr, Sr.

John Parr, Sr.'s extant will (Patrick Co., VA Will Bk. "1" [1791-1823] Reel 14, p103), dated 20 Jan 1808 in Patrick Co., VA, lists his wife, Miriam, and his children, Arthur, Noah, Elizabeth Corn (wife of John Peter Corn), John Parr, Jr. (deceased, October 1806 in Patrick Co., VA), Miriam Fletcher (deceased wife of John Fletcher) and his daughter, Mary Crump (wife of Robert Crump III).

An inventory of John Parr, Sr.'s estate (Patrick Co., VA Will Bk. I [1791-1823] Reel 14, p248) dated 09 Apr 1808 contains a very long list of items including hogs, horses, horse cart, harness, plows, shoe makers tools, kitchen utensils, shot bag and powder horn, knives and forks, a parcel of old books, feather bed and furniture.

The DAR gives John Parr, Sr.(1725-1808) credit for 1) Civil and 2) Patriotic service. The description of this service is: 1) Took oath of allegiance, 1777; Appointed surveyor of road, 1779; 2) Furnished supplies (Ref: Virginia Magazine of Hist & Bio, Vol. IX, page 16; Henry Co., Virginia Order Book #1 - Abstract in Documentation with #626159; Abercrombie & Slatten Virginia Revolutionary Public Claims, Vol. 2, pages 513, 518).

John Parr, Sr. is also recognized by the SAR for his Civil and Patriotic contributions. A John Parr was a Sergeant in the 3rd Virginia Regiment commanded by Lt. Colonel William Heth in the Revolutionary War during the year of 1778 (see attached payroll document). Note: I question that this is John Parr, Sr. (1725-1808) for several reasons. First, in 1778, 53 Y/O John Parr, Sr. was residing in Henry Co., VA a great distance from where this Virginia Regiment was originally formed in Alexandria, VA in 1775. The regiment participated in the 28 June 1778 Battle of Monmouth in Monmouth Co., New Jersey. John Parr, Sr. was recorded in the 1779 Rent Roll of Henry Co., VA. His 28 Y/O son, John Parr, Jr., was probably the person recorded on this Revolutionary War payroll document.

Children of John and Miriam Parr, Sr. were:
1) John Parr, Jr. b. Abt. 1750 Patrick Co., VA, d. October 1806 in Patrick Co, VA, m. Abt. 1772 to Mary Smith (daughter of William and Hannah Smith, Sr. of Patrick Co., VA), b. 1759 VA, d. Abt. 1831 Lincoln Co., TN (Ref: DAR Ancestor #: A088047).
2) Arthur Parr b. Aft 1755 Halifax, Co., VA, m. Mary (__?__)
3) Noah Parr b. Aft. 1755 m. 1) Rhoda Poor 01 Jun 1798, Patrick Co., VA, m. 2) Polly Deal 13 Oct 1802, Patrick Co., VA., He served in Revolutionary War as Musician (Fife and Drum) on 06 Feb 1775 in North Carolina 2nd Battalion.
4) Hannah Elizabeth Parr m. John Peter Corn
5) Miriam Parr b. Aft. 1860 Halifax Co., VA, d. Bef. 20 Jan 1808 Patrick Co., VA, m. John Fletcher 16 Sep 1783 Henry Co., VA.
6) Mary Parr m. Robert Crump III (See below)
