Louis was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Alsdorf who immigrated from Prussia in 1855. Jacob supported the family by working as a shoemaker. Louis was the oldest child, with 4 others coming after him: Catherine/Kate c. 1858, Christina c. 1859, Elizabeth c. 1861, and Jacob c. 1869.

Jacob, Louis' father, died sometime between 1870 and 1880. Louis was supporting his widowed mother and younger brother by working as a farm laborer in 1880.

When Louis was 27 years old, he married 22 year old Elizabeth Marie "Lizzie" Pletz on November 15, 1883 in Woollum, Gasconade County, Missouri. They subsequently moved to Topeka, Kansas where Louis supported the family of four children working as a boilermaker for the railroad and as a laborer for an iron foundry.

Lizzie died in 1925 at the age of 64 and then Louis died in 1939 at the age of 82, while living with his son, Edward, out in California.
