Emily Cheek Carter, age 82, died Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Coventry House of Siler City.

Emily was born June 8, 1931 to William and Ethel Carter and grew up in Siler City. She graduated from Women's College (UNCG) and taught school for many years in North Carolina and Virginia. Upon retirement Emily returned to Siler City where she enjoyed gardening, playing Bridge, watching Duke Basketball and traveling. She attended Piney Grove Church and First Baptist Church. Emily enjoyed her family and friends. She is preceded in death by parents and a brother, William "Bill" Oliver Carter, Jr.

She is survived by sister Louise C. Ivey, nieces Dee Lunney and husband, Ed, Kathy Newton and husband, Mike; nephews, David Carter and Chris Carter and great-nephews Michael Newton and Noah Carter.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 3, 2013 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. A graveside service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday September 4, 2013 in the Oakwood Cemetery, N. Chatham Ave, Siler City with Rev. Jim Folks officiating.
