George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough was born on 26 January 1738/39.1 He was the son of Lt.-Gen. Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough and Hon. Elizabeth Trevor.1 He was baptised at St. James's, London, England.1 He married Lady Caroline Russell, daughter of Lt.-Gen. John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford and Hon. Gertrude Leveson-Gower, on 23 August 1762 at Bedford House, Bloomsbury, London, England.1 He died on 29 January 1817 at age 78 at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England.1,3 He was buried on 7 February 1817 at Chapel, Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England.1 His will was probated on 12 June 1817.1
He was styled as Marquess of Blandford between 1739 and 1758.1 He was educated between 1747 and 1753 at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Ensign on 14 June 1755 in the service of the Coldstream Guards.1 He gained the rank of Captain on 12 June 1756 in the service of the 20th Foot.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Earl of Marlborough, co. Wilts [E., 1689] on 20 October 1758. He succeeded to the title of 6th Earl of Sunderland [E., 1643] on 20 October 1758. He succeeded to the title of 4th Duke of Marlborough [E., 1702] on 20 October 1758.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Baron Churchill of Sandridge, co. Hertford [E., 1685] on 20 October 1758. He succeeded to the title of 8th Baron Spencer of Wormleighton [E., 1603] on 20 October 1758. He succeeded to the title of 4th Marquess of Blandford [E., 1702] on 20 October 1758. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire in 1760.1 He held the office of Lord Chamberlain of the Household between 1762 and 1763.1 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 22 November 1762.1 He held the office of Lord Privy Seal between 1763 and 1765.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 6 July 1763.1 He held the office of High Steward of New Woodstock on 15 October 1766.1 He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 12 December 1768.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 25 May 1786.1 His last will was dated 3 March 1812.
"His Grace is said to be a nobleman of great worth, generous, humane and hospitable, no abject courtier, yet a lover of peace, and an enemy to faction."1 The Farington Diaries states that "though nervous in the extreme and reserved, he possesses a great deal of humour."
