Ward H. Haylett, Jr., 83, of Mission Hills, Kansas, passed away on June 22, 2006. Ward was born on December 13, 1922, in Clay Center, Nebraska, son of Ward Sr. and Alice (Johnson) Haylett.

He spent his early school years in Manhattan, Kansas, where his father was Kansas State University's hall-of-fame track coach. After graduating from High School, Ward attended the Kansas City Art Institute, where he worked in the studio of Thomas Hart Benton. During World War II, he enlisted and proudly became a carrier-qualified Naval aviator. After the war, he returned to his studies at Kansas State University, where he earned his architectural degree. Thus, becoming the self-proclaimed "world's foremost architect." While at K-State, he was an active member of Beta Theta Pi, which recently honored him as its "Beta Man of the Year."

In 1951, he married Jeanette Doran and later they were blessed with their daughter, Jan Elizabeth. In 1952, he formed his own architectural practice, which continues today as Linscott, Haylett, Wheat, Inc. Ward became a successful and prominent Kansas City businessman, whose many architectural contributions continue to grace the Kansas City landscape - garnering over 35 professional awards. Ward was blessed with many friends and was a member of many civic and social organizations. He was a cofounder of the Chouteau Society, which works to memorialize sites of importance to the early French settlers in the Kansas City area. He was an avid reader, had a world-class sense of humor, loved the arts and music and particularly enjoyed serenading his friends with Mac the Knife - for which he knew the words to all of the verses. His first wife predeceased him.

Subsequently, he met and married Wendy Allen. They enjoyed socializing with a wide circle of friends, traveling and creating their home together. Ward is survived by his wife, Wendy, his daughter, Jan Elizabeth of Chicago, IL, his step-daughter Kimberly Shaw, of Seattle, WA, his sister Joan (Jody) Billings, her husband, Ronald Billings and their children, Charles Billings, Ward Billings and his wife Deborah. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kent and Janet Searle of Colorado.

There will be a Memorial Service at Second Presbyterian Church, (55th and Oak, Kansas City, MO) at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 27, 2006. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the American Stroke Foundation.
