ALTAMONT — Joseph O. Goings, 77, of Altamont passed on to be with his Lord at 11:35 a.m. on Saturday morning May 1, 2010, at his home in Altamont.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning May 5, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran, Altamont, with the Rev. Dr. James R. Wright officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday, May 4, 2010, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont, and again for one hour prior to the funeral service Wednesday at the church. There will also be a visitation at McDaniel Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. prior to the committal service. Military burial rites will be conducted in Union Cemetery, Sparta, following the Sparta visitation service by the Rev. Bruce A. Cameron and local VFW Post 2698. For those who prefer memorial contributions, they may be made to Altamont Boy Scout Troop 140 and/or the donor's choice.

Joseph Oliver Goings was born Feb. 25, 1933, the son and one of 11 siblings of William Preston and Arbella Farley-Goings in Princeton, W. Va. He married Albertha Dora Gerlach on March 2, 1952, in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sparta, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 1, 1990.

Joseph was baptized and a confirmed member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Altamont. He and his wife and two boys moved to Altamont in 1970 from Sparta, while working for World Color Press in Effingham, where he retired in 1993 as the bindery manager. He then was a part-time employee of Bob's Salvage in Effingham, until his health did not allow him to continue working. While living in Sparta, he was very proud of being a Boy Scout leader, and while retired in Altamont, enjoyed horticulture and fishing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was especially proud of his granddaughters, and he loved spending time with his family.

In his passing, he leaves behind his two sons, Dennis Gene (wife, Terri) Goings of Mattoon and their children, Christina Goings and her daughter Evelyn Thompson, Selena Goings, Sarah Goings, Christina Guadiana and Jessica Guadiana; Dale Robert (wife, Stacia) Goings of Effingham and their daughter Taryn Goings; one brother, Howard Goings of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Lola Mills of Berkley, W. Va.; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
