DIED FOR HIS COUNTRY BUT DAMNED BY HIS OWN HEADSTONE!

Cemetery records indicate the individual buried in plot 1701 is Joseph Maurer, but the tombstone clearly reads "I. MAMER." Cemetery records and headstone orders were handwritten with quill and inkwell in the script of the period.

Capital letters "I" and "J" and the number "2" were easily confused. A succession of lower case letters could also be easily confused.

One person ordered "J. MAUER" with the roster mispelling of his family name, but the stonecutter read "I. MAMER." This is tragic for an American war hero.
