All-State basketball player. Often teased for his size as he attended elementary and middle school, "Big John" grew to be seven feet tall and his skills had earned him a full scholarship to the outstanding program at the University of Kentucky. He had also servedÊas a ball boy with the Indiana Pacers. His support of hospitalized children and special education students earned him local and national recognition. He tragically collapsed and died while playing in a regional championship basketball game during his senior year. The "Wildcats" are the mascots for his Lawrence North High School and the University of Kentucky, whose team honored him with black armbands for one season. John will be a "Wildcat Forever." The John H. Stewart Foundation for Disadvantaged Children, Inc. was established to carry on John's dream of enriching the lives of children who are different, disabled or disadvantaged in some way.
