Loren was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, and the son of Jeremy and Susan (Snow) Hixon.

His family left Erie County, Pennsylvania family for Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana in 1834, before eventually settling on a farm in Winfield Township, Porter County, Indiana.

Loren followed his older brother, Jeremy, to Chicago where he became a sailor on the great lakes. He reached the rank of first mate.

He returned to Lake County, Indiana in 1852. He purchased 80 acres of land in 1854. In addition to farming, Loren became a successful merchant, living for a period of time in Valparaiso.

Loren married Hellen Lawrence about 1860 in Lake County, Indiana. Three sons came from the union: Charlie, Ernest and Walter.

He married Julia Adeline Homes on June 27, 1877, in Lake County. No children are known to come from the union.
