Wayne was the son of Lewis Ezra and Hannah Elsie (Mercer) Pierce. Wayne Pierce and Maxine Rosemond of Portland, Maine were married on June 14, 1943. Wayne resided at R.D. 2, Newark, Delaware when he joined the Navy. During World War II, Wayne served as a Signalman Third Class on the gunboat U.S.S. St. Augustine (PG-54). He was declared "Missing In Action" when the St. Augustine was accidentally rammed by the merchant tanker Camas Meadows off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey, and perished along with 114 others. He had served in the Navy for two years and six months at the time of his death.
