In 1930 he and Iona and their four youngest children lived in a house they were renting for $15 a month at 310 East Tenth Street (now NE Fourth Street) in Aledo. They did have a radio. He worked as a carpenter on house building.

He worked as a carpenter on building construction, with an income in 1939 of $840 for 28 weeks of work, and Kenneth as a waiter in a restaurant, with an income in 1939 of $20 for 12 weeks of work.
