He was a Pvt. in Capt. Hart William's Co. Col. Ed Phinney's Regt in the Revolutionary War

According to the History of Gorham, Maine (p. 584), James Jr. was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in 1775, serving in Captain H. A. Williams' Company (31st) and Col. Phinney's Regiment for one year. He re-enlisted in 1777, as a sergeant in Captain Whitmore's Company, Col. Fogg's Regiment and spent some months at Peekskill, on the Hudson River, before returning home in 1778. He then cleared and owned a farm on Flaggy Meadow road (which was owned by a Mr. Grouard in 1899). All of James' children were born before his departure to fight in the Revolution. He was listed in the 1790 Census with a family of 2-1-2 (2 males over 16, 1 male under 16, and 2 females). James Jr. was accused of counterfeiting (Cumberland County Commission Records, 2:156). He and his wife were also sued regarding a sale of land. According to court records, James Irish, Jr. of Buckfield, and Mary his wife sold Lot #115 in Gorham saying that it was without encumbrances whereas it had a mortgage on it. CCCCP, p. 80, Roll #2 (October Court, 1789, p. 211) states "Asa Stevens of Portland, aforesaid, Inholder Complainant vs. James Irish Junr. of Gorham in Said County Yeoman for not prosecuting his appeal from Judgement obtained against him by said Asa before John Frothingham Esqr and praying affirmation of said judgement with additional damages and costs as a complaint on File is set forth - It is therefore considered by the Court that the said Asa Stevens recover vs. the said James Irish Jun the Sum of five shillings for Damage and Two Pounds four shillings and six pence Costs. Execution issued Jany. 19, 1790. The inscription on James Jr.'s gravestone in the South Street Cemetery, Gorham, reads " In memory of James Irish, died April 1, 1816, AE 80. He lived an honest, prudent, and industrial life, died in peace, and we trust sleeps in Jesus." His headstone also said he was the son of James who came from Boxfordshire, England, about 1710, settled first in Falmouth (now Portland and removed to Gorham in 1738. CENSUS RECORDS: The 1790 census of Gorham lists James as a head of household that consisted of two males age 16 and over (James and son Samuel), one male under age 16 (son James), and two females (wife Mary and ??).

In 1777, when their youngest child was but one year old, the husband, JAMES IRISH, was called into service in the war of the Revolution, leaving the care and support of this large family of children entirely to his wife. JAMES IRISH is listed in the 1790 U.S. Census in Gorham and Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine [Roll M637_2, Image 0080]. James was also a soldier in the War of 1812.
