DALE BROSTROM
1926 - 2012

Dale Brostrom of Gaithersburg, MD passed away peacefully on December 10, 2012 at the age of 86. Born in Wilton, ND on May 19, 1926, to David and Alice Brostrom, he grew up on a farm during the Depression and enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17. He served in the South Pacific during World War II, participating in naval actions at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Upon discharge from the service, he graduated from North Dakota State University, having attended school while working full-time and supporting a family. Mr. Brostrom pursued a career in higher education, serving as a university administrator in North Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and California, retiring in 1988. He was honored by North Dakota State University in 2007 at the rededication of the student Memorial Union, having served as its first director. An accomplished handyman, he spent 16 years working in his retirement "dream job" at a local hardware store. More than anything, he enjoyed helping others and expected nothing in return. He was a gentle man, truly generous in heart and spirit.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ferne I. Brostrom, and his two children, Nancy Brostrom Vollertsen of Minneapolis, MN; and, Kent Brostrom of Bethesda, MD. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Vos of Mesa, AZ; and, brothers Chester Brostrom of Fargo, ND and Paul Brostrom, residing in Tacoma, WA, and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James.
Mr. Brostrom will be inurned with full military honors on September 6, 2013 at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dale Brostrom Endowed Scholarship Fund at the North Dakota State University Development Foundation, 1241 University Drive N, Box 5144, Fargo, ND 58105.
