Vernon and Frances met at a "house dance" while they were both in high school. Frances attended Cooper High School and Vernon attended Bagley High School. According to school records, Vernon was a member of the Bagley High School class of 1933. Following their marriage in December, 1935, Vernon and Frances lived with her parents until the spring of 1936, when they moved to the farm they rented east of Panora. Four years later, they purchased Duntman's Grocery in Bagley which they ran until 1944.

Following their grocery store business, Vernon purchased a corn shelling business from Clyde Kinney which he ran for hire until 1950. At that time the family moved back to the farm for another 10 years until son Larry took over the business.

Vernon then was employed as parts manager at Gilliland Implement in Bagley from 1964 until he retired in 1982. He also served several terms as Bagley's mayor including a term during the Bagley Centennial in 1982. At the same time, Frances was working at the Lutheran Home in Perry, a job she kept until 1985. Unable to retire, Vernon then farmed a widowed friend's farm for her until he finally quit at the age of 83.

During these busy years, Vernon and Frances raised their three sons, Larry, Gary, and Rodney, plus enjoying the arrival of six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Vernon served as Bagley's mayor for a number of years.

Vernon and Frances stayed in Bagley until 1999 when they moved into the Greenwood Apartments in Jefferson.

Vernon died in January, 2010 at 95 years and 3 days of age.
