Vernon was a life-long resident of his beloved Merchantville, NJ. As a child he lived on Rogers Avenue, after marrying, he and Helen lived on West Walnut Ave and in later years moved to a newly-constructed house on Krump Alley, very close to Aunt Charlotte's Candy Shop. He was devoted to his wife Helen and his son Vernon "Chuck" Jr. (Paulette) of Russellville, AR. He had two grandsons, Vernon (Trey) III and Jeff, both in Arkansas. Vernon was a veteran of the European campaign of World War II, serving in the Army at the Battle of the Bulge. An avid outdoorsman in his youth, he paddled the waters of South Jersey in his canoe. After retiring from Weyerhauser (where he received numerous US patents and awards for his work in the packaging engineering field), Vernon wrote manuscripts about his military service and his paddling trips down the Delaware. He graduated from Drexel University, attending with the help of the GI bill.

Vernon was instrumental in bringing the Shadetree program of the National Arbor Day Foundation to Merchantville. http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM95Y9_Vernon_H_Collins_Merchantville_NJ
