The Monument to Colonel Angell at the Rahway Bridge in Union, New Jersey contains the text of a letter from General George Washington to Governor William Greene of Rhode Island after the Battle of Springfield June 23, 1780:

"The gallant behavior of Col. Angell's regiment... at Springfield reflects the highest honour upon the officers and men... They disputed an important pass with so obstinate a bravery that they lost upwards of forty killed, wounded and missing before they gave up their ground to a vast superiority of force. - Your Excellency's Most Obedient Servant George Washington."

General Nathanael Greene wrote a similar letter commending Colonel Angell.

Colonel Angell kept a journal and made daily entries. Some of his entries just talked about how nice the weather was on that particular day, but he was at the battles of the Brandywine, Red Bank, and Monmouth. His journals are still available in book form.

His name is on a monument at Valley Forge.

He received gold medals from General George Washington and the Marquis de La Fayette. The gold medal presented to Col. Angell by Lafayette was donated to the Rhode Island Historical Society museum collection in 1938.

His great grandfather Thomas Angell was one of five men with Roger Williams who settled Rhode Island in 1636.
