MARSHFIELD - Raymond Allen "Joe" Barr, 75, Marshfield, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at a Marshfield nursing home after an illness.
Mr. Barr was born Sept. 7, 1922, near Stoutland. He graduated from Stoutland High School in 1939. He was graduated form the former Southwest Teachers College 9 now Southwest Missouri State University), Springfield, in 1946.He received his master's decree from the former Kansas State teachers College, Pittsburg.
He was an army Air Corps veteran of WWII who served in Europe. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and and the Air Service Medal.
He moved to Liberal, Missouri in 1948 where he was a basketball coach and biology teacher. He moved to Marshfield in 1955, where he served as a high school principal before he became superintendent of schools in 1969. He was superintendent until he retired in June 1984.
He was a member of the Lions Club, the American Legion and Marshfield First Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and deacon. He also worked on several building projects at the Marshfield school System and was on the Building committee for First Baptist Church and Garst Memorial Library.
He married Wilma Harvey on sept. 9, 1949 at Liberal. She died in 1994..
Survivors include a son Pat Barr, a daughter Dea Borneman, three sisters, Mildred Webster, Lorene Dickinson, and Eunice Hedgepeth, three brothers Don, Bob, Bill Barr, and three grandsons.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Marshfield with the Rev. Darwin Kicker officiating. Burial will be in Marshfield Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Arthur's Colonial Chapel, Marshfield.
