Joseph H Orr (1795-1850) War of 1812 and The Black Hawk War

  Joseph H. Orr was born in Glade Spring, Washington, Virginia Feb 21,1795 to Arthur Orr and Ann Ryburn, both originally from PA.  He served in the War of 1812 under Capt. Bradley's VA Regiment calvary commanded by Capt. James Orr and attached to the 70th Reg.* Upon discharge, Joseph married his first wife Eliza White in 1817 in Virginia and the couple moved to the Sparta area, Randolph County, Illinois in 1818 with brother Thomas Orr. Eliza and Joseph had 3 known children: James W., Eliza Ann and a baby girl. Eliza died about 1825.

Joseph next married Nancy Robinson, daughter of Richard Robinson and Catherine Lively in 1826. The couple had at least 4 children: Mary Emeline, Thomas, Pamela and a baby boy. In 1832, Joseph enlisted in the Black Hawk War under Capt. James Conner's Company, 3rd Regiment of the 3rd Brigade of the Illinois Mounted Volunteers. He mustered out Aug 17, 1832 after making Quartermaster Sergeant. 

In 1839, Joseph purchased a tract of land in T 5S R 8W Sect.15 SENW west of Evansville and south of Ruma, IL off Rt. 3 where the census records show he farmed.  His brother Thomas also lived and farmed in the area but removed to Pike County in 1829.** Joseph died April 14,1850, and is buried in the Union Cemetery, Sparta, Randolph County, Illinois.

The source of this claim comes from the Daughters of the War of 1812 in which there is no documentation provided and members submit for membership. Errors get made. Joseph could not be found in Bradley's Militia in VA or any VA militia, no payroll, pension application or land grant. The Black Hawk War is however, clearly documented. - Carole Pancake Morris

**The Census records, 1859 Directory and land purchases do not support the statement made that Thomas moved to Pike Co in 1829. Since he is buried there, he obviously went, but the date appears incorrect. - Carole Pancake Morris
