Jeremiah McLaughlin must have been a man of some stature as an account of him claims that he knocked an entire crowd of "hoodlums" out, leaving one man lying senseless on the ground for some time. This incident occurred in June 1891, when a drunken fight broke out under the window of his rooms in the village of Au Sable Forks, New York, where his wife lay very ill. He appealed for the crowd to disperse, but they responded in a "vile" manner, incurring his response.
