Richard E. Backer, III, 56, of 2 South St., died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack Saturday, November 27, 2004, at Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville.
Born January 19, 1948 at Dover, NJ, he was the son of Richard E. and Betty L. Morris Backer Jr.
On May 16, 1970 in Ithaca, NY, he married the former Daphne R. "Becky" Hammond, who survives.Dick had resided most of his life in the Belfast area and was a graduate of Ithaca High School. He later graduated from Ithaca College with a Bachelor's degree in science. For several years he was in the advertising department for the American Agriculturalist Magazine, and then for many years was a salesman for New Idea Farm Machinery First in Central New York then until 1990 in Belfast. In 1990, he became co-owner of Brentwood Stables in Angelica, operating the business until the present time. He had coached T-ball and little league in Belfast.Dick was an avid reader and loved to hunt and fish. He was a past member of the Belfast Fire Department and past member of the Farm Bureau.Surviving in addition to his wife are his parents, Richard E. "Dick" (Betty) Backer of Belfast; a son, Joseph D. Backer at home; a daughter, D. Gretchen Backer at home; two brothers, Joseph William (Roxanne) Backer of Castile, Jeffrey A. (Allison) Backer of Atlanta, GA; two sisters, Karen Lynn (Edmund) Dellert (Backer) of Ithaca, Susan Marie (Jeffrey) VanDeCar of Hinsdale; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Richard E. Backer IV.Friends may call at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Belfast, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, where Contributed by Starfishin [#48860385] Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Belfast. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Belfast Rescue Squad.
