Augustus Milton Aiken married Emma Eliza Smith (Nov 12, 1840-Jul 30, 1864), sixth child of Joel Smith and Isabella Marshall Smith, of Stony Point on Nov 27, 1860 at Stony Point.
Augustus Milton Aiken born in Winnsboro Jan 10, 1834, was a younger brother of Col D Wyatt Aiken who married Virginia Carolina Smith, daughter of Joel Smith and sister to Emma Eliza Smith.
Augustus was engaged in the cotton business in Charleston at the beginning of the War Between the States. He was the seventh son and youngest child of David Aiken and Nancy Kerr Aiken of Winnsboro. He enlisted as a member of Company C, 7th S.C.R. and later was a member of the personal staff of General M.C.Butler. His wife, Emma Elizabeth Smith Aiken died in 18 64 in Winnsboro. They had no children.
Augustus Milton Aiken was known to his family and friends as “Gus” Aiken. Immediately after the War, he began farming at Stony Point.
He was married, 2nd time, May 23, 1866, to Mary Ann Chapman Gilliam (Jan 27,1845-Jun 7,1877) daughter of Robert C Gilliam, son of General James Gilliam of Greenwood. Augustus, in 1867, bought the home of his wife’s father, “Sunnyside” in Greenwood and removed here from Stony Point.
Augustus and his 2nd wife had 3 children:
1 – Dr Hugh Kerr Aiken married Mamie Thomas, 2 children
2 – James Gilliam Aiken, never married
3 – Jessie Glenn Aiken married Fletcher D Hodges, 4 children
