Emilie was the daughter of Anson Alexander Bigelow and Emma Ullmann. She married Norman Hapgood on 17 June 1896 in Chicago. In 1870 Emilie resided with her parents and older brother, Nelson in Chicago. In 1900 and 1910 Emilie resided in New York, with her husband Norman and daughter Ruth. Norman and Emilie divorced in 1915 in France.

In 1917 the Emergency Circle for Negro War Relief was organized in New York. Emilie was the Chairman. She indicated that 200,000 Negros enlisted during the Civil War and 5000 fought in the Revolutionary War under General George Washington.

The daughter of Norman Hapgood and Emilie Bigelow was:
1. Ruth Hapgood (1897- (Lieutenant Sewell Tappan Tyng Jr.)
Ruth and Sewell married Sewell Tyng in Paris. They later divorced. In 1937 Ruth was living in Zurich, Switzerland.

"New York, Feb. 16 (AP)
Announcement was made here tonight of the death in Rome, Italy, yesterday of Mrs. Emilie Bigelow Hapgood one-time produce of modern drama classics in New York City and former wife of Norman Hapgood, editor and author.

The former Emilie Bigelow, a daughter of the late Anson Bigelow, Chicago banker, at one time occupied a prominent position in the theatrical world and once was president of the Stage Society. During the World War she founded and headed for a time the "Circle of War Relief for Negro Soldiers".

She and Norman Hapgood were married in Chicago on June 17, 1896. They were divorced in France in the Spring of 1915. Hapgood, two years later married Elizabeth K. Reynolds of New York.

A daughter, Mrs. Ruth King,(should read Tyng) who was with her mother in Rome, survives. Burial will be in the Protestant Cemetery near the Italian capital."
