Joseph Bovia was the son of Joseph Bovia and his wife, Kanalia (Cornelia) Bovia. He resided in Hinesburg, Vermont until 1861.
On 20 May 1861, he enlisted in Company K, 2nd Vermont Infantry Regiment of the Union Army. He mustered 20 June 1861 to DC and fought battles in Maryland and Virginia.
Joseph was promoted to Corp. on 1 Sept. 1862. On 27 August 1863, he was promoted to Sgt. He re-enlisted in January of 1864. In May of 1864, he participated in the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia, where he was mortally wounded. Joseph died on 8 May 1864 as a result of his wounds.
