During his early years he lived in five different states, but from the age of 11 until he entered West Point at 19 he was raised and educated in Texas. After graduating from West Point in 1953 he commanded infantry troops and served on parachute status at every rank from 2nd lieutenant through major general. He served in Germany, Lebanon, Korea and Vietnam and commanded four platoons, two rifle companies, a mechanized infantry company in the DMZ of Korea, two infantry battalions in combat in Vietnam for 18 months, and was a brigade commander, the Chief of Staff, assistant division commander, and commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division. He is both a Ranger and a Master Paratrooper with 153 jumps. His final Army assignment was Director of Army Training in the Pentagon. Among his more than 60 awards and decorations were a Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, a Silver Star, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Bronze Star Medals for valor, and two Purple Hearts.
After retiring from the Army he worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, and served on a number of committees and boards in Austin and later in Georgetown, TX. A devout Christian, he was active with his church as a Eucharistic Minister taking communion to the homebound.
Author of more than 20 articles on leadership in professional publications, Sandy had unshakable integrity, empathy for others in all stations of life, was deeply loyal to his friends, and not only thoroughly enjoyed a joke on himself but was the first to laugh. He climbed the Leaning Tower of Pisa, walked across the Bridge over the River Kwai, was blessed by a Pope in Rome, walked in the footsteps of Jesus in Jerusalem, drove the Alaska highway, toured the Taj Majal in India, and made military parachute jumps in six different countries and 10 different states, and as a young man had the privilege to play Friday night Texas football. Two of his favorite pastimes included a good day out on the bass boat, and horseback riding on Texas trails. Above all, he considered his greatest gifts to be the love of his wife, his family, and his friends.
