Jerome "Jerry" Thomas Casey passed away on Friday, August 23, 2013 at age 78 years after a long journey with Alzheimer's, his wife Faith at his side.

Jerry was born to James "Bud" Casey and Edna Madeline Owen Casey on Feb. 23, 1935 in Sioux City, Iowa, the youngest of three children; he is survived by his sister Patricia Crawford and brother James Casey. Jerry was very proud to have served in the United States Marines. After an honorable discharge from the military, he moved to the Bay Area where he was first a Berkeley Police Officer for seven years, but found his true calling as a fireman for the Contra Costa Fire Department, retiring as a Battalion Chief in 1985. Oh the stories he could tell of his days in the Bay Area!

The charm and beauty of Nevada City captivated Jerry and in 1986, he and Faith purchased a vacation home on Banner Mountain, became permanent residents in 1990, and in 1993, bought their Nevada City dream home: "The Pines". Jerry was a true lover of the outdoors and enjoyed working on the property, driving his tractor, camping, riding his bike, watching college football, and playing with his canine best friend Maggie. Jerry was a kind and gracious host and enjoyed entertaining friends and family near and far. In the winter, when the snow was deep, Jerry read books of mystery and adventure and he and Faith would plan their trips. Traveling the world was one of the great passions on their long "bucket list": Asia, South America twice, Europe, and across the USA. When you first met Jerry you were immediately taken by his handsome friendly smile, tall and muscular physique, the self-assuredness of a man with purpose, direction and kindness. His sense of humor made all those around him comfortable and filled with laughter, but it was also that sense of humor that hid the slow and steady decline of his memory.

In late 2002, Jerry was diagnosed with the beginning symptoms of Alzheimer's. This terrible disease that robs one of their mind and memories did not prevent Jerry and Faith from continuing their "great adventures": cruising to the Baltics in 2008 with their friend Cheryl and having the most remarkable time; cruising the Mediterranean with their dear friends of the 1960/1961 Tennyson High class, and countless long weekends with friends and family. These memorable journeys and moments could not have occurred without the love and support of their friends. Thanks to these kind people who did not run away from the discomforts and challenges that dementia imposed on Jerry, but instead, these wonderful people drew closer, gave comfort and support, and gave Jerry the gift of seeing the world.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife Faith, his daughter Shawna, stepsons Richard and Christopher Mahan, and his grandsons Luke and Finnegan Mahan.

Jerry's family will not hold memorial services; however, in honor of Jerry, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Foothills.

The family is extremely grateful for the excellent care of Jerry by Dianna Hospice RN and Bonnie Hospice MSW, the Care Partners at Highgate Senior Living Center ("The Cottage"), and Jerry's friend and partner in adventure the last two and one-half years, David Berry. Thank you, all.
