JACOB EMMETT "JAKE" WENNEKER

J. Emmett "Jake" Wenneker, 97, of 639 York, formerly of 1935 E. Parkview Dr., died at 9:00 Tuesday (January 29, 2008) in Sunset Home.

Born April 5, 1910, Jake was the son of C.A. and Myra Colwell Wenneker. He married Trula Brockschmidt on October 3, 1932 in Beardstown, IL. She survives.

Mr. Wenneker attended Dewey and Madison Schools and was a 1928 graduate of Quincy High School. He was a member of Central Baptist Church where he had served as a trustee, deacon, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and past president of the Loyal Workers Sunday School Class. Jake was a 50 member of Bodley Masonic Lodge #1, Quincy Consistory, Ansar Shrine Temple in Springfield, Quincy Shrine Club and Quincy High Twelve Club. He was a 50 year member and past Worthy Patron of Alpha Chapter 109 and O.E. S., 50 year member and past officer of Miriam Shrine #3 of White Shrine of Jerusalem. Emmett was a member of the Uncle Sam's Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a member of the Lightweight 8 Oar Rowing Crew of the South Side Boat Club from 1930 to 1932. He also enjoyed gardening and collecting stamps.

Jake had been employed in the concrete business with his father. Later he began his career at the Quincy Post Office retiring after 42 years as the assistant Superintendent of Mails.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Julie Johnson and her husband David of Springfield and Jeri Wenneker of St. Louis, MO; two great grandchildren, Breann and Brittney Johnson both of Springfield; a great great granddaughter, Baylee Draper of Springfield; two nephews, John Ferguson and his wife Barbara and William Ferguson both of Versailles; four nieces Judy Easley of Versailles, Agnes Hall and her husband Gene of Wingo, KY, Janet Brockschmidt Homberger and her husband Joe of Quincy and Joyce Brockschmidt Badali of Katy, TX; and several great and great great nieces and nephews.

Mr. Wenneker was preceded in death by his parents, a son Rev. James E. Wenneker, four sisters, Joy Wenneker, Faye Wenneker, Juanita Paulsell and Helen Ferguson, and a niece Phyllis Beima.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Ivan Grueter. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Friday afternoon from 12:30 until the time of the services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church.
