Scientist. Born in what was then Quedlinberg, Prussia, he started studying geography from an early age. Primarily, he believed that by studying cultural geography, it would provide insight into human behavior. By 1820, he become professor of geography at the University of Berlin and in 1828, he helped found the German Geographical Society. In 1872, he began working on a book, "Erdkunde," which he would work on all the way until the time of his death in 1859 totaling nineteen volumes in all. Today, he is widely considered to be the co-father of geography with Alexander von Humboldt.
