Jessie Willis Brodhead Wagner was born in 1878 in Washington, D.C. where her father, John Thornton Brodhead, was stationed as a US Marine.

Jessie's paternal grandfather was Col. Thornton Fleming Brodhead, a cavalry officer fatally wounded at the Second Bull Run during the Civil War. He died on Sept. 2, 1862. Jessie's mother was Jessie Willis, daughter of the music composer Richard Storrs Wills.

Jessie married Rob Leicester Wagner (1872-1942) in 1903 in Detroit. They lived in Paris in 1903-1904 while Rob studied art. In 1904, they returned to Detroit. Jessie gave birth to her first child, Leicester Wagner (1904-1965), the same year. Leicester became a journalist. By 1906, Jessie was suffering from tuberculosis. She and Rob left the harsh Detroit winters for Santa Barbara, California. There, the couple had a second son, Thornton Wagner, in 1906. He would become an airline pilot.

Jessie died in August 1906 at the age of 28 due to complications from tuberculosis. She is interred in a crypt at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Rob Wagner pursued portrait painting, but turned his interests to motion pictures. He was the editor and publisher of Rob Wagner's Script magazine until his death in 1942.
