John "Jack" E. Ruff LCDR USN Ret.; Director of Public Works Pittsburg PA Ret.; and Instructor at Community College FL Ret.; passed away on August 27th 2012 in Melbourn Florida.

He was born on August 12th 1932 in Schuylerville, N.Y., the son of Joseph A. and Rita (Fremont) Ruff Sr.

Jack married Martha DeVoe Rabine of Schuylerville, N.Y. on July 24th 1957.

They started their married life in Bainbridge, MD but after only six weeks of being married that base closed and they were off and running. Jack and Martha moved 25 times and lived in 9 states and Japan.

Jack was a 1949 graduate of Schuylerville Central School and Delhi University in 1951.

He joined the US Navy where he advanced from Seaman to Senior Chief Builder in the Seabees and Ensign to Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Civil Engineer Corps.

He served in 18 Commands and was sent to 22 Countries and Islands in the Pacific, Atlantic and Caribbean.

Jack attended 36 Navy and civilian schools giving him an excellent and rounded education.

Or there was the tale of making a trip with two of his pals to Rome, Italy from Northern Africa with the help of two other Schuylerville graduates, Julian (Sparky) Cornell and second unnamed Schuylerville-ian.

While in the restaurant of the hotel down the street from the Vatican where they were staying, he and his two friends were approached and asked if they wanted to meet The Pope. But sadly he was traveling from Japan to report for duty on November 22nd 1963.

Upon landing in San Francisco he was told the new president wanted his own appointments, so Jack's duty was changed and he went to Maine instead.

He was most proud of making the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 8 years time of being in the Navy. Quite an accomplishment by Navy standards.

In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years Martha, his brother Joseph A Ruff Jr., and his baby brother George Ruff.

Military honors will be held at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y.
