"Shone" was the daughter of Willie T. Ridley and Carrie Lee Ridley. She was a 1977 graduate of Perry High School in Perry, Georgia. She joined Davis Chapel AME Church in Henderson, Georgia at a young age. She later became a member of the Temple of Miracles and also attended the Church of the Living God.
She was married to Stephen McCoy. She was preceded in death by a sister; Ira Dean Lee.
