Death of David Melcher

John David Melcher died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. William Knapper, west of Plymouth Nov 23rd, at the age of 88 years, 10 months and 19 days after a short illness. he left Fairbury on Nov 4th to visit friends at Clatonia and Plymouth but illness changed his plans and he was brot to the home of Mrs. Knapper where he received medical attention. His advanced age made his recovery doubtful because bronchial pneumonia had set in.

Mr. Melcher, the son of Jurgen and Margaret Bischoff Melcher was born in Hanover, Germany January 4, 1843 where he spent his youth. In 1866 he bid farewell to his home and friends and emigrated to America and arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio July 10th of the same year where he lived for nine years. During this time, on Feb. 9, 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Florence Koch and to this union were born three daughters.

In 1875 Mr. and Mrs. Melcher and family journeyed westward, coming to Alexandria, Nebr., where they settled on a farm three miles west of Gladstone. Here he lived until his retirement in 1910, when he moved to Gladstone, where Mrs. Melcher passed away on Oct 28, 1914. Since Feb. 1922 Mr. Melcher has made his home with his grandson, David Melcher in Fairbury.

He was baptized in the Lutheran church in Germany in early infancy, later also confirmed and at the time of his death he was a member of the Grace Lutheran church at Fairbury.

Those who survive are his three daughters: Mrs. Frank Starr of Alexandria; Mrs. Henry Meyer of Fairbury; and Mrs. Caroline Meyer of Chanute, Kansas; 13 grandchildren, four others having preceded him in death, and 18 great-granchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 12:30 from the Wm. Knapper home three and a quarter miles southwest of Plymouth and at 2:30 at the Presbyterian church in Alexandria in charge of Richardson Co. of Fairbury and conducted by Rev. Oscar Decker of the Grace Lutheran Church of Fairbury. Burial will be in the Alexandria cemetery.
