Actor, Motion Picture Director. He is best known for his interpretations of the works of Berthold Brecht, he began his acting career in 1947 in Magdeburg. He was selected for Brecht's famous Berliner Ensemble theater group in 1952, and he remained there until 1995. In tandem with his wife, actress Barbara Brecht-Schall, he led the Ensemble from 1971 to 1992. He played more than 60 different roles at the theater, his most famous role being Arturo Ui in Brecht's "Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui". He won numerous awards from the East German government and also was awarded the Obie in 1985 for his one-man Brecht show "An Evening with Ekkehard Schall", staged Off-Broadway in New York. In 1983 he appeared as Franz Liszt in the TV miniseries "Wagner" with Laurence Olivier and Richard Burton. After reunification, the Ensemble was privatized, so he eventually left to work on his poetry.
