AREA RESIDENT PRISONER OF JAPS ON PHILIPPINES
CORP. RAYMOND E. GEERHOLT OF SNYDERS LAKE UNHEARD FROM SINCE FEBRUARY, LAST YEAR
Corp. Raymond E. Geerholt, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Geerholt, of Snyders Lake, is a prisoner of war of the Japanese in the Philippines, according to word received by his parents from the War Department yesterday.
Corporal Geerholt had been serving with the U S Army Engineers in the Philippines at the time of the fall of Bataan and Corregidor and the last word his parents received from him was a letter dated Feb. 4, 1942.
Soon after the fall of Corregidor, Mr. and Mrs. Geerholt had a letter from the War Department stating it was uncertain whether their son was a prisoner or a casualty.
Corporal Geerholt, a graduate of Averill Park High School in the class of 1935, had been a carpenter in business with his father up until he entered the service May 27, 1941. He left California for service in the Philippines Ot. 4 of that year.

SNYDER'S LAKE SOLDIER DIES IN JAP PRISON
Corp. Raymond E. Geerholt of Snyder's Lake is dead of illness in an Asiatic area prison camp, according to a telegram from the War Department received yesterday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William L. Geerholt, of Snyder's Lake.
The telegram read: "Report now received from Japanese government via International Red Cross that your son, Corp. Raymond E. Geerholt previously reported prisoner of war in Asiatic area, died of illness in Asiatic area prison camp date unreported. The Secretary of War shares your grief and extends his deep sympathy."
Letter follows: The telegram was signed "Ubo adjutant general.
Corporal Geerholt's family had not had direct word from him since Feb. 4, 1942, when they had a card from him saying he was in the Philippines and had been promoted to corporal. The card said a letter would follow but the letter never arrived.
The War Department reported him missing in action May 27, 1942, and on Jan. 1, this year informed his family he was a prisoner in an Asiatic area camp.
Born in Stephentown Jan. 3, 1919, young Geerholt had attended district schools and was a graduate of the Averill Park Central School.
He was a member of the Averill Park Baptist Church, Interlochen Lodge, I.O.O.F. of Averill Park and West Sand Lake Grange. While in high school he was keenly interested in basketball and served as manager of the team. After graduation he worked with his father as a carpenter.
Young Geerholt was drafted May 27, 1941 and sent to Fort Belvoir, Va., where he was assigned to the Engineers. His promotion to corporal came while he was in the Philippines.
Besides his father and mother, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Marian G. Robinson of DeFreestville.
