Carleton served as a Private, 302nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 77th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 11, 1943 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted as being employed as a Opticians, lens grinders, and polisher and also as Single, without dependents.

Carleton was "Killed In Action" on Okinawa during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in the 77th Division Cemetery, Okinawa and was later repatriated here on June 15, 1949.
