Joseph Eugene "Gene" McClellan, 88, of Columbia passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at University Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Curry officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Joseph was born Nov. 3, 1917, the son of John Lawrence and Lillian Inez Walker McClellan in Union County, N.M. He married Bessie Griffith, and she preceded him in death in 1986. He later married Arvilla Deacon on May 30, 1987, and she survives.

He graduated from Dalhart High School in Dalhart, Texas. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force serving in the 2005th Maintenance Corp while stationed in India. He later attended Rankin School of Mechanical Trades in St. Louis, studying refrigerator mechanics. He worked many years for the University of Missouri as a refrigerator mechanic. He worked with the local farmer's market and volunteered at the university for many years. Joseph was a member of the New Providence Baptist Church, where he led the music for many years. He was also a member of the Older American Club Choir, Rhythm Band and Jammers.

Survivors include stepchildren Sharon Walkup of Columbia, Donald Long Jr. of Dallas, Michael Long of Enid, Okla.; stepgrandchildren Jason Walkup, John Scott Long and Katheryn Michelle Long; stepgreat-grandchildren Gideon Long and Isaac Long; brothers Howard McClellan of Amarillo, Texas and Cecil McClellan of Texline, Texas; and sister Ida Mae Amyx of Dalhart, Texas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by three brothers, John Walker McClellan, Lutter McClellan and Clarence McClellan; three sisters, Bonnie Fero, Lillian Kelley and Mamie Love.
