Julia Hardin Foote, 73, of Baltimore, MD, and summer resident of Ephraim, WI, died late Friday afternoon, August 23, 2013 at Ministry Door County Medical Center, following an automobile accident that occurred in Ephraim, WI.

This whimsical artist, mother, and teacher was born on June 18, 1940, in Milwaukee, WI. She was the beloved daughter of William and Julia (Hardin) Foote.

Her passion for learning carried her through John Burroughs High School class of ‘57, St. Louis, MO, a BA in French from Wooster College in Ohio, a BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute, and MFAs at both Pratt Institute, and Boston University. As a professional fine artist she was a painter, printmaker, sculptor, children's book author and member of the Baltimore Fells Point Art Gallery and City Arts Gallery. Her book "Amelia" is offered locally at the Paint Box Gallery in Ephraim. She taught figure drawing at Spring Street Studio, New York, and art classes at a Baltimore Montessori school.

Julia's family has spent summers since 1909 at "Birches" in Ephraim. She was a driven political and local activist for arts education and "Get out the Vote". Those left to mourn her passing are her three children, Elijah "Lij" Shaw (and his daughter, Sarayah Shaw) of Nashville, TN, Nate (Jessica Tolliver-Shaw) Shaw (and their children, Josie and Pearl Tolliver-Shaw) of Brooklyn, NY, Emily (James Hagen) Shaw (and their children, Peter and Isabel Hagen) of Baltimore, MD, two sisters; Tiggy (Walt) Shields of Fish Creek and Tucson AZ, Ann (Edward) Petersen of Washington, DC, and one brother, Edward T. Foote II of Miami, FL.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2013, at Ephraim Moravian Church. Friends may call at the church from 12:00 noon until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be made in the church cemetery.
