Professional Football Coach. Blackbourn served as the third head coach in the history of the National Football League's Green Bay Packers from 1954 to 1957. He both played football and coached the freshman football team for Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin and after graduating, went into coaching, first in high school and then college. Blackbourn served as an assistant coach first at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and then Marquette University before becoming the head coach at the latter school in 1950. He served at Marquette for three years before being hired as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers in January 1954. Blackbourn coached "the Pack" for four seasons before being fired after a 17-31 win-loss record during his stint. He was credited for drafted many of the players, including Forrest Gregg, Bart Starr, Ray Nitschke, Jim Taylor, Paul Hornung, and Jerry Kramer, that made the Packers "the dynasty" they were under head coach Vince Lombardi in the 1960s. After leaving the Packers, Blackbourn stayed in football, both as an assistant coach and scout until he retired in 1972.
