Joseph B. Pitts
May 23, 1921 - August 15, 2013

Today, we celebrate and honor the home going of our beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather Joseph B. Pitts.

On Thursday, August 15, 2013, Joseph slipped into eternal rest. Joseph B. Pitts was the sixth child born unto Oliver and Annie Pitts. He was preceded in death by his siblings Griffin Pitts, Isaac Pitts, Cornelius Pitts, Mozelle Mack, Margaret Pitts, and Sarah Lockett.

Joseph, whom we affectionately called Joe, was born May 23, 1921. He attended grade school in Baldwin County, Georgia. Upon graduation, Joseph pursued advanced education at L.L. Cooke School of Electrical Engineering in Chicago, Illinois and the National Radio Institute, where he studied electronics and radio repair. At an early age, Joe developed a curiosity and a love for electronics, building transistor radios and experimenting by testing various methods in which to harness electricity using windmills with his brothers.

In 1945, he enlisted to serve in the U.S. Army Air Force Corps as a Pre-Flight Communications Specialist. He was stationed in Pueblo, Colorado, where he served until he was honorably discharged from military service. Upon his discharge from the service, Joe accepted a position with Wagner Radio Hospital in Myerstown, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a Radio Technician. In 1946, Joe worked in the Naval Shipyards as a Radio Technician. In 1947, he decided to accept a position with The Naval Air Development Center, in Johnsville, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a Laboratory Electronics and Acoustics Technician. In November, 1953, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he opened, owned and managed Midway Electronics. In 1957, he became a partner and manager of Electronic Research and Development Lab in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In1948, he married Carrie Lyons. From this union, he was blessed with a son, Eric S. Pitts, who preceded him in death.

In 1960, he moved to California where he accepted a position with North American Rockwell as an Electronic Test Equipment Mechanic for 16 years. In the early 1960's he married Delores Jones (Pitts) and from this union he was blessed with two sons, Vincent Pitts and Derek Pitts. On September 29, 1973, Joe married Kathryne L. Mangrum (Pitts) who preceded him in death. From this union, he embraced and raised three daughters, Deborah Y. Mangrum, Pamela R. Mangrum (Dozier), and Leslie K. Mangrum.

He pursued several business ventures in California, opening Pitts Automotive in San Bernardino, California, a gas station in Los Angeles, California, and a residential plumbing business in Riverside, California. Joe was also an excellent cook. He worked as a Chef for Joe De Palma's Italian Restaurant for several years. In addition to managing his businesses, Joe worked for California State University, Fullerton for 15 years where he was employed as a Television and Electronics Engineer until he retired in 1988.

Joseph was a man who said what he meant and meant what he said. He was a man's man. There wasn't anything he couldn't do or repair with his hands. He was a man who possessed much knowledge. Without a doubt, Joe was a diligent worker, excellent provider, fabulous cook, superb father, and a fine role model for his children. As a connoisseur of fine foods, Joseph enjoyed dining out at various restaurants with family and friends. In his spare time, Joe enjoyed taking day trips to Apple Valley, Big Bear Lake, and rebuilding all types of electronic equipment. He spent numerous hours exploring investment opportunities and was always willing to bestow his knowledge to others.

In 2003, Joe accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He enjoyed watching John Hagee Ministries every day. His heart was truly fashioned by the Lord and he lovingly sought to serve the Lord throughout his remaining years.
