Newton Phillip Short was the son of John Short 1810 – 1886 and Eliza Jane Everhart 1846. He had 1 brother, Venoy Short, and 11 half siblings.

Newt married on Dec. 23, 1903, Mattie Morrisett in Hawkins Co. Tennessee. They had 9 children. They were: Baby Short 1905; Leola Dale Short 1906 – 1926; Raymond Earl Short 1908 – 1985; William Ross Short 1910 – 1991; Jessie Lee Short 1912 – 1964; Phillip Newt Short 1914 – 1986; Glen Short 1917 – 191; Paul Short 1918 – 1919 and Richard Lee Short 1921.

In 1910 He was farming a rented farm near Bulls Gap Tennessee.
His wife, Mattie, daughter Leola and son Raymond, and his mother Eliza Jane were living in the same household.

By the 1920 census, Newt has moved his family to rural Deer Creek, Carroll, Indiana. They were living in a rented house and he was employed as a farmer.

On June 10, 1927 in Madison Township, Carroll County, Indiana, was a very sad day for Newt and his family, His dear Mattie passed away. A few days later Newt and this family and friends gathered in the La Fontaine IOOF Cemetery
La Fontaine, Wabash County,Indiana, at a grave site he chose for her, to bid his beloved Mattie to Rest in Peace.

A year later in 1928, Newt chose a widow, Kathryn Smith Luster to be his 2nd wife. The 1930 census revealed that Katherine had three Luster children in the household. Newt fathered 4 children with Katherine. They were: Fredrick Short 1929; Jean Short 1931; Kenneth Dale Short 1934 – 2007
and Ralph Short 1934.

The 1940 census reveal that they had been living in Delphi, Carroll, Indiana in 1935, but in 1940 they were currently living in Waltz, Wabash, Indiana. He had completed the 7th grade of schooling. His house rent was $10.00 a month and he was employed as a farmer. He and Kathryn now had added 3 more children to their family, a daughter Jean, and sons, Ralph and Kennith.

March 11, 1960, Newton Phillip Short passed away. He was buried in the La Fontaine IOOF Cemetery La Fontaine, Wabash County,Indiana, beside his first wife. (bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
